Vestigial Limb has released a steady stream of tapes, split 7” and CDRs in the past twelve months. On the back of this comes “Immolation Ritual”, a three track EP of long, industrial combustion of a limited print run of 117.
The EP has two halves. The first track “Guam” runs in locked layers of tone, static flow and deep guttural rumble. The second half starts with “Tinpan” involve wavering electronics expanding and contracting that becomes submerged in concrete recordings of bubbling liquid and accompanying static. This second half is where this recording is at its strongest. “Saipan” continues in the same vain, largely eschewing the sort of blanket noise of the first half. It is punctuated by seismic bursts that advance and retreat in repetitious cycle. “Immolation Ritual” paints pictures of rusted wastes and slowly collapsing landscapes in patient bursts that sting the ear. 8/10 — Alex Kakafikas (12 November, 2008)
