the big update
Posted on August 31st, 2007 at 8:55 am by joe

My superstar partner in crime, Emily, and I have been focusing on getting the next two doses and first round of Killing is My Business discs ready for release. We’ve been getting loads done, but it’s kept me away from getting the samples and pics from the two new releases up online. It should happen this weekend. The Half Makeshift and Nicholas Szczepanik discs will be released at the end of next week. I also will have a whole bunch of new distro items available.

The email address will get the first notice when everything becomes available. If you haven’t signed up yet, I recommend it. You can do so by entering your email address in the appropriate spot on the right side of this page.

For now here is the lowdown on all of the small doses release, past, present and future.

doseone culver: the witches ladder 3″ cdr – running low on these

dosetwo aidan baker: i will always and forever hold you in my heart and mind cdr – down to the last 5

dosethree hoor-paar-kraat: the huntington chapters 3″cdr – these will also soon be gone for good

dosefour b. baphomet: einsplundaghn cdr – I’m just waiting on the master for this one, abd I think it’s just been finished. If you talk to Myk, give him a little nudge. He’s been super busy and active with Thee Kvlt ov Ouroboros, By the Horns, and his super DJ alterego, Mr. Bambu. It won’t be long now. The artwork is halfway finished. I’m hoping this will be in the next batch. It will rule.

dosefive fences: 1 3″ cdr – this one’s gone. My hope is to release a few more limited fences discs and then compile them on a future release. It’ll be a while, but let’s think positive.

dosesix half makeshift: final cdr – This one will be out next weekend. The first 30+ are assembled and ready to go. The rest will be ready this weekend. I’m really pleased with this one. Edition of 151.

doseseven fences/peasant graves collaborative split 3″cdr – I cannot tell a lie. Fences is holding this one up. The peasant graves stuff is fantastic. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer.

doseeight thank you cdr – Thank You is a Minneapolis drum/guitar duo. Absolutely fantastic stuff. They just want to record one more track, and then this one will be ready to roll.

dosenine warmth/medroxy progesterone acetate split 7″+3″ cd (released with Phage Tapes) – Yep, the first foray into vinyl! I can’t wait. This one is already at the pressing plant. Test presses should be back in the next two weeks. The artwork is done. Drooling yet? The 7” will be limited to 300 copies. The version sold via mailorder by small doses and phage tapes will include a bonus 3” cdr (limited to 100 copies) with exclusive Warmth and MPA material.

doseten killing is my business cdr subscription series – Did you miss the boat on this one?

doseeleven wereju cdr - Cathal is working on some new material for this one. Can’t wait.

dosetwelve ryan jewell 3″cdr – Ryan is an incredibly versatile percussionist from Ohio. He works with anyone and plays every kind of music under the sun. He is one of the most talented dudes I’v eever met, and I can’t wait to hear what he sends me. It could be anything.

dosethirteen nicholas szczepanik: astilbe rubra cdr – this one came together incredibly quickly. They are completely done, and will be ready for next week’s release.

dosefourteen mên scryfa: the sky was troubled with the dread strength of the wind 3″cdr – mên scryfa is Chris and Simon from the amazing metal/doom/drone band Atavist. I’ve heard some of the initial guitar and drum tracks on this one, and it will be incredible.

supplies are dwindling

I am starting to run very low on the Culver 3″ and Hoor Paar Kraat 3″. I don’t think they’ll be hanging out too much longer, so if you’ve been hemming and hawing, time is running out.

There are only 5 copies of the Aidan Baker disc left. Act fast!

the next two doses
Posted on August 24th, 2007 at 9:03 am by joe

Hopefully, you’ll see a lot of posts here over the next few days. (this is already the second one today!) I have much in the way of news and updates, and have been too busy getting them online.  Firstly, the next two small doses releases are on the horizon.   The Half Makeshift disc has been in the works for quite some time, and has evolved quite a bit over the last couple months.  What began as a 3” has become a 4-track full length recording called final.  If you have heard and enjoyed either of the other Half Makeshift releases, you will no doubt like this one as well.  Final’s deconstructed guitar and piano melodies provide the soundtrack to the quiet after the storm.

Hitting the streets with the Half Makeshift disc will be the debut recording from Nicholas Szczepanik.  It’s a 58+ minute recording called Astilbe Rubra.  Nicholas sent me an initial version of this record, and I was floored.  It’s a well-woven work that integrates electronics, traditional instruments used non-traditionally, and field recordings.  I’ve not really heard anything like it.   He employs a restraint that few seasoned artists can.  If this is his debut, I can’t imagine where he’ll go from here.  I’m quite sure this will not be the last we hear from him.    It’s fitting that the two of these recordings found the same home and are being released at the same time.  Though they differ from one another quite a bit, you can hear where their paths converge and diverge.  I have no doubt that this has everything to do with the fact that Half Makeshift’s Nathan Michael and Nicholas Szczepanik are friends and inspirations to each other.   Some samples and images of the packaging should be on this site in the next few days.  Stay tuned for a definite release date, but right now, I’m shooting for the weekend of September 7.  I can’t wait to get these into your hands.

another mini update

all of the orders i’ve received up to this moment are packed up and will be in the mail first thing tomorrow morning. (about five and a half hours from now – there are good and bad sides to being an insomniac). I didn’t get the new stuff in the shop yet, but hope to tomorrow. I’ll post again when I do.

A few more bits:

The fine folks over at Animal PSI posted a notice about the Killing is My Business series. Subscriptions will be accepted through Sunday, August 12. After that, no more. Don’t miss your chance.

The Half Makeshift art is coming along very nicely. It should be finalized next week. Hopefully the disc will be in the shop within a month’s time.

A friend of mine started a new label called Phage Tapes. You’ll win big points if you get where the name comes from. Small Doses and Phage Tapes will be announcing a collaborative release that will take us both in a great new direction. Run over to MySpace and be a friend to Phage Tapes.

mini-update
Posted on August 8th, 2007 at 8:19 am by joe

I’ve admittedly fallen a bit behind on orders.  (Well, not really behind as far as the ‘big picture’ is concerned, but I typically prefer to get everything out within three days.)  All orders that have not yet gone out will be in the mail first thing tomorrow morning.

I’ve got some new stuff that should be in the distro this evening.  I’ll post again when they’re up.

I’ll also have some news about some new releases that I’m super excited about.  Stay tuned.
