Almost there – an update
Posted on March 29th, 2007 at 2:28 pm by joe

I was hoping to have the web shop open before the end of March, but that’s starting to look a little unlikely. The Culver CD is basically ready to travel, but I am hoping to have a second release ready before opening the shop. Once I have the shop ready, I’ll see where things stand and go from there.

Here’s the news on everything:

· I’m pleased to announce that B.Baphomet will be releasing a full-length CDr on Small Doses. The disc is called einsplundahen. The art is in process and the final audio is being assembled. The music ranges from dark, sludgy dirges to beautiful, melodic drones and everything in between.

· Hoor-Paar-Kraat: The Huntington Chapters 3″ CDr is coming very soon. The master is on its way tome and the art will be a collaborative effort of sorts involving some of Anthony Mangicapra’s new paintings. I can’t wait to hear this thing.

· Aidan Baker: I WIll Always and Forever Hold You In My Heart and Mind CDr is well on its way. This is an incredible full-length recording comprised of some beautiful melodies and pulsating drones. I may be biased, but this is some of my favorite work from the prolific Mr. Baker. We’ve just about finalized the design, and a final master is in the mail. I hope to have some samples of this release online this weekend. Stay Tuned.

· Culver: The Witches Ladder 3″ CDr is ready to go. These pics aren’t the greatest, but I think you can get the gist of it. The first shows a disassembled and assembled version. The second is the obligatory aRCVHIVE-esque photo of the assembled run. Click on either for a larger version.

The Culver CD is in a hand-numbered edition of 131 copies. Each was cut and folded by hand and features a hub label randomly printed with the cover motif. No two are exactly alike. Each comes in a vinyl sleeve for your protection.

· Also in the works is a large-scale project. I can’t share too many details just yet, but I’m incredibly excited about how it’s coming together.

That’s about it for now. I should have a review of a recent Warmth (Roxanne Jean Polise) tape up here soon. Look for another post in the next few days.

some brief notes on upcoming releases
Posted on March 11th, 2007 at 12:21 am by joe

· Aidan Baker: “I will always & forever hold you in my heart & mind” full-length CDr.  Frankly, Mr. Baker can do no wrong.  I have yet to hear a project that he’s been involved with that hasn’t left me wanting more.  It’s an honor and a privilege to work with him.

· Hoor-paar-Kraat: 3″ cdr.  This is currently in the recording phase.  I love the new directions HPK is heading in.  This recording is falling on the heels of a new full-length CD and an LP (HPK on VINYL!!!) on Goat Eater Arts.

· You know about the Culver, and it is getting closer and closer to completion.  I think I’ve listened to the recording about 30-40 times now.  It keeps getting more and more interesting.  I hope you enjoy it as well.

· There are some other projects in the works as well. A project or two with my other favorite Flooridians is a liklihood, and I’ve been talking with some folks here in Minneapolis as well.  Stay tuned…

Culver – The Witches Ladder – sample and image up
Posted on March 5th, 2007 at 8:36 pm by joe

Lee has approved the artwork for the disc. I’ve made a mock-up and scanned it. Take a look at the release page for the culver cd to take a look and listen to a sample from the disc. Soon, the covers and inserts will be printed, the cdrs burned, and the lot can be assembled. It shouldn’t be too long now.

Culver – The Witches Ladder
Posted on March 3rd, 2007 at 2:16 pm by joe

The first release on Small Doses will be a 3″ CDr by the UK’s Culver. The prolific Culver is Lee Stokoe, the bass player of Marzuraan. There have been several Culver releases on Lee’s own Matching Head Tapes label and most recently, an incredible full length composition called The Black Telephone Wire was released on At War With False Noise. I can’t recommend his work more highly.

The small doses release features a minimal, 17-minute, pulsating, mesmerizing drone composition entitled The Witches’ Ladder. I’m thrilled for this to be the first release. The artwork is nearing completion, and it should be available soon. Keep watching for samples of the track and the artwork.

a message from Nate Young of Wolf Eyes
Posted on March 3rd, 2007 at 11:13 am by joe

Hey everyone,

On the morning of Feb 24th my brother Peter Young was in a fire. He
was injured with 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 30-44% of his body.
Neighbors reported seeing him coming out of his apartment unharmed
only to see him run back in to save his dog Little John. The smoke and
heat over took Pete as soon as he reentered the apartment. Pete was
found unconscious and burning by Brighton Police and Fire Department
who rushed him over to the U of M hospital. His apartment was
completely destroyed and Little John did not make it. Pete has no
medical insurance or insurance on his apartment which he owns. He is
undergoing surgery for skin grafts and has not been conscious yet. He
will be in the hospital for at least 2-3 months.

I am asking for donations to help my family with some of the medical
bills and the rebuilding of his apartment. I have set up a paypal
account in Pete’s name.
There are over 1000 members on this board, if everyone donates at
least $1 that will be a big help.

Please paypal donations to Peter.B.Young (at) gmail (dot) com
Please try to pay the paypal fee if paying from a credit or debit card.

Pete first introduced me to punk, psychedelic rock and noise – the
music that inspired me the most as a kid. He also painted the cover
for the first Wolf Eyes album released on Bulb. Without him Wolf Eyes
may not have ever existed. I hope you’ll help me give him something
back.

With much thanks,
Nate Young

He went back in for his dog. He’s a hero in my eyes. Give if you can, I’m sure they’ll need every penny. R.I.P. Little John.

welcome.

Small Doses is a long time coming. In essence, it is a record label. I will be releasing, at least for now, short runs of CDRs by artists/bands/etc. that I enjoy/listen to/support/etc. packaged in ways that are a little non-traditional and interesting, at least to me.

In this space, I will post any and all news about the label as well as news and reviews of other records and goings on.

I will be posting more news soon, but I have 4 or 5 projects in the works, and I hope to have at least something ready for release before the close of March. I’ve also been gathering a few other things to sell along with my releases.

This website is very much a work in process and will be fleshed out, piece by piece, over the coming weeks.

stay tuned.
